Emergency First Aid (Appointed Persons)

Who Should Attend?

Any member of an organisation or company who is likely to find themselves taking charge of a first aid emergency, or assisting a qualified First Aider. Although not a compulsory requirement, Health & Safety Executive recommends this course for those who are ‘appointed’ to take charge of first aid provision if the number of employees and occupational risks are low.

The course gives the candidate a basic knowledge in the essential skills of patient care.

The course meets the recommendations of the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 issued by the Health & Safety Executive. It is delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L74 for training of candidates in first aid for low risk environments.

Course Overview

This course covers the basic essentials required to provide emergency care to a patient.

Candidates will receive training in a range of first aid skills including:

  • The ability to act safely and effectively when an accident or emergency occurs
  • The treatment and priorities of care for an unconscious patient
  • The recognition of cardiac arrest and delivery of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • The ability to safely and promptly treat a patient who is bleeding
  • The keeping of simple records following an accident at work

The course follows a standard syllabus as laid down by the HSE that utilises the following training methods:

  • PowerPoint style presentation with short video clips to confirm theoretical input
  • Hands on practice in small groups
  • Positive coaching from approved Instructors with a maximum group size of 12 students per instructor
  • Up-to-date medical information presented in a relaxed learning environment
  • Opportunity for questioning and completion of candidate feedback document on completion

Certification

Candidates who successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate and plastic wallet card. The qualification is valid for three years.
