To survive manufacturers must take on board the rising expectations of customers in terms of Quality, Delivery and Cost. They want precise quantities of defect free products delivered to an exact timetable at an ever decreasing cost and at shorter and shorter notice.

At the same time products have a shorter lifespan and ever increasing specifications.

To achieve this slack must be taken out of the system through a series of tools and techniques known as Lean Manufacture
